X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to investigate Gd intermetallic compounds: GdCu, GdAg, Gd2In and GdAl2. The measured electron density of states close to the Fermi level was compared with the magnetic properties of these compounds. The exchange splittings of the gadolinium 4s and 5s levels were analysed and found to be about the same for the investigated compounds. For GdCu the present results were compared with the existing band structure calculation.
