We present the results of studies in the pulsed switching of SBN crystals obtained by dielectric and optical methods. This process in SBN is characterized by a very slow kinetics even at E >> E-c The switched charge Q(s) smoothly grows with E, sometimes not coming to a saturation. The decisive factor controlling the switched charge, thus an amount of the switched crystal volume is the field pulse duration rather than the amplitude. This specific of the pulsed switching is qualitatively accounted for by the existence of a wide spectrum of the activation fields Ea caused by randomly distributed internal fields in the bulk of a relaxor ferroelectric. In single-domain crystals Q(s) is significantly lower than in poly-domain ones owing to pinning effects.
