High resolution XPS measurements of the Gd3Pd valence band and core level states reveal formation of a narrow Pd 4d band. The Pd M45N45N45 Auger spectrum of Gd3Pd exhibits narrow, quasiatomic spectral features in comparison with the bandlike character observed for pure Pd. The effective Coulomb interaction U-eff between two 4d holes on the same atomic site was determined. The complex character of the valence band influences the magnetic properties of the compound.
