By investigating the concentrations of paramagnetic centers in two nominally undoped BaTiO3 single crystals at low temperatures as depending on illumination with light of varying wavelengths the resulting charge transfer processes could partly be identified. The corresponding photochromic behavior of the crystals was studied by measuring optical absorption simultaneously with ESR. Essentially two trap levels are involved: a deep one (Fe4+/3+) and shallow ones, which have been characterized by joint ESR and optical absorption measurements.
