It is shown that a moving intensity grating in a photorefractive crystal with a sufficiently large lifetime-mobility product can give rise to an instability against excitation of weakly damped space-charge waves. Increments and threshold of the instability are investigated for the threedimensional case. Subharmonics and other nonlinear scenarios of saturation are discussed.
