Performing a coordinate transformation of the measured experimental data the inhomogeneous broadening of the E-2-->(4)A(2) transitions of Cr3+ was directly separated into contributions from the variations of the low symmetry crystal field and of free ion parameters. At liquid helium temperatures fine structure in the spectral response of Cr3+ ``defect'' centers in high crystal field sites was observed. Our results are discussed on the basis of a microscopic hierarchic model for perturbed Cr3+ ions in the lithium niobate crystal lattice. |
