Objective: Systematic concepts for the prevention of occupational skin diseases in metal workers are not available. Therefore, a study comprising 1. the documentation of risk factors, 2. diagnostic and 3. therapeutic intervention was initiated. Methods: At the University of Osnabrueck 59 metal workers participated at an in-patient rehabilitation program with respect to tertiary prevention of occupational skin diseases in the year 2002. Results: 95% of occupationally induced skin disorders affected the hands. Irritation caused dermatitis in 95%. In 30% of cases allergic contact dermatitis was (additionally) diagnosed. Constitutional skin sensitivity was detected in 60% of our patients. Consequences: A systematic, modular concept of secondary and tertiary prevention is needed to prevent and/or minimize occupational skin diseases in metal workers.
