Ammonium persulfate is the most important contact sensitizer among the group of persulfates which are used almost exclusively in hair bleaching products by hairdressers. It has been found to be the most common occupational contact sensitizer in this profession. Ammonium persulfate not only elicits allergic contact eczema but also immediate type reactions of the skin, mucous membranes and the bronchial system. In rare cases, severe respiratory reactions or even an anaphylactic shock are possible. Beyond the hairdressing trade, a relevant contact to ammoniumpersulfate has to be expected for only few other occupations. The impact of an allergy to ammonium persulfate on the reduction of earning capacity in cases of occupational skin disease according to the German regulation for occupational diseases is classified as "low grade". Few cases with anaphylactic reactions to moderate amounts of the allergen might be rated as "medium grade". © 2010 Dustri-Verlag Dr. Karl Feistle.
