Background. Among health promotion projects in German primary schools only a few have been evaluated in the sense of evidence - based orientation to health promotion. Project and methods. In the pilot phase of the project "Die Gesunde Stunde", a school-based project promoting physical activity, healthy eating, stress management and the reduction of media consumption was evaluated using a pretest-posttest control group design.Results. There were significant improvements in the intervention group, above all in physical activity and drinking water at school.Conclusion. Low-threshold offerings to improve physical activity have a good chance of sustainable success in the elementary school context. Areas of prevention with greater family involvement (media consumption, nutrition, stress management) involve complex requirements and need a high level of professional resources. © Springer-Verlag 2012.
