We present the prototype “GuidAR“ for pedestrian navigation utilising augmented reality. The routing of GuidAR is based on a sequence of prominent landmarks on the way to the destination, in contrast to the established turn-by-turn navigation approach like it is implemented in Google Maps. Thus, natural elements of human wayfinding are exploited and integrated in an intuitive navigation application for the mobile phone. The results of a first evaluation of the prototype reveal general benefits of the augmented reality approach in comparison to Google Maps, as well as some drawbacks and necessary improvement.
