The Long Twentieth Century of Forced Migration. In the global context, forced migration can be described as a characteristic of the 20th century. Although mass flight, displacements, deportations and the typical circumstances under which they take place - war, the collapse of state institutions, and civil war -Are not specific to modern times, the 'long' 20th century does stand out on account of the frequency and scale of forced migrations and their far-reaching social impact. This article examines key patterns of forced migration, considers what triggers forced population movements and enables their implementation, and explores the policies and practices of admitting people who have fled violence and seek protection elsewhere.
