The article aims at a comparison of representative versions of the 'Eckenlied', revealing thereby specific features of the different retextualisations. When focusing on the remarkably complex verbal exchange between the giant Ecke and Dietrich von Bern immediately prior to their actual fight, the study combines a literary approach (literary hermeneutics) with a linguistic concept (historical conversation analysis). A detailed look at the different dialogue structures as well as aspects of performance thus gives new and intriguing insights into the 'Eckenlied' and especially into the characterization of its main protagonists.
