Ions at low energies are used for the growth of thin films. Part of the ion-surface interaction are charge-exchange processes causing neutralisation, dissociation and trapping. Negative molecular ions have been identified as precursors in dissociative adsorption and in associative desorption. In the present work C2+ and CH+ are found to form C2- and CH- species when scattering at energies of 1 to 3 keV from a Ni(110) surface at grazing incidence. Also atomic species are found from dissociation processes. For comparison energy spectra of the atomic species, C+ are measured too.
