dc.description.abstractThe scattering of hydrogen from metal surfaces is of interest in nuclear fusion research for two reasons: (i) the plasma-wall interaction and (ii) the production of intense neutral hydrogen beams for refuelling and heating. The Ni-H system is also of basic interest in surface chemistry and physics for reasons of hydrogen storage, catalysis and fuel cells. Studies of hydrogen interaction with surfaces are proceeding and a discussion follows as to the mechanism of dissociation of the incident molecules.
