The German `Youth Employment Protection Act' allows dermatological pre-employment check-ups of juveniles. In spite of the increasing incidence of occupational dermatoses this option is however hardly used. Especially in professions going along with wet work, a dermatological pre-employment screening should be carried out to detect atopic skin diathesis, which is combined with a high risk to develop a professional hand eczema. We examined 83 patients in `'wet work professions'' with work related eczema. It was to be found out whether atopy could have been diagnosed before taking up occupation. The result was that half of the atopics could have been detected early in case of dermatological pre-employment examination.
