The paper, first, summarizes and evaluates Pohl's theoretical approach to regional identity and, second, criticizes his empirical analyses. The theoretical part of Pohl's thesis offers an overview over different theoretical approaches to regional identity from the perspective of various social sciences. In spite of some vagueness and ambiguity in the argumentation Pohl is able to correct and improve the hitherto existing geographical concepts for an understanding of regional identity. The empirical part does not meet the expectations arising from the first part. A detailed analysis shows that Pohl's operationalizations of the theoretical concepts are to a large degree invalid. One of the reasons for this weakness seems to be the following: Contrary to his own theoretical approach Pohl considers regional identity basically as a feature of psychic systems, which can be detected by questionnaires, and not as an element of social communication systems.
