The behaviour of dextran in the mixed solvent H2O/(1-4)-dioxane has been studied by static and dynamic light scattering. Dioxane is a precipitant for dextran. Addition of dioxane to an aqueous solution of dextran induced a conformation transition of dextran from a random coil to a compact globule. Thereby, a dextran molecule first swells when the dioxane content is small and collapses when the dioxane content is large. Prom static light scattering the parameter of selective adsorption, lambda(A), the second virial coefficient, A(2), and the radius of gyration, [S-2](0.5)(z) were determined. By means of dynamic light scattering the hydrodynamic radius, R(H), the structural factor, rho, and the stiffness parameter, k(f)(0) were studied. The experimental results are discussed on the basis of the Flory-Huggins theory including the ternary coefficient, g(T). Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
