The electronic structure of Gd(Al1-xCo(x))2 compounds for Co concentrations x = 0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 1.0 was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. An energetic shift of the Gd 4f majority spin peak on doping with Co is not detectable. The shape of the occupied Co 3d valence band near the Fermi level in pure GdCo2 is in good agreement with calculations of the density of states for paramagnetic YbCo2 from the literature. Slight discrepancies between experiment and theory can be attributed to the intrinsic magnetism of the Co sublattice in GdCo2.
