Light-induced refractive index changes and holographic beam coupling are investigated in nominally pure and Al-doped bismuth titanium oxide (BTO) crystals. Nominally pure crystals show n-type photoconductivity and the expected writing and erasure curves. In Al-doped BTO samples, however, compensation effects by thermally excited holes have to be taken into account for electronic space charge fields. The holes are less mobile than the electrons.
