The location of tyrosine Z (D1 Tyr-161), the immediate donor to photooxidized P680, has been probed using a fast photovoltage technique. We found an electrogenic reaction with an amplitude of 16% of the charge separated state P680(+)Q(A)(-) and a time constant of 29 ns which is attributed to the electron transfer between Tyr Z and P680. The result is discussed in the light of current structural models.
