Four Gd compounds with Cu (GdCu, GdCu2, Gd2Cu9 and GdCu6) were investigated with use of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The chemical shifts of most prominent photoemission lines were analysed. We found that the Gd core level shift is always positive and independent of the compound stoichiometry. The limited applicability of the charge transfer models was shown. The variation of the Cu 3d band was observed with composition. GdCu was investigated with use of the synchrotron radiation at the Gd 4d-4f resonance. We found an antiresonance-like behaviour of the Cu 3d photoemission. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A, All rights reserved.
