The theoretical basis of two contactless probes for the investigation of relaxation processes in ionic conductors, absorption of ultrasound and holographic methods, are reconsidered. The comparison shows that not only damping of ultrasound but also the holographic methods exhibit an anomaly-like resonance behaviour at the characteristic relaxation frequency of the system. A review of the data obtained by these and other methods corroborates that the anomalies reported for alpha-LiIO3 in the range 100-250 K are caused by a rapid exponential increase of the relaxation time scale from less than seconds to several years and the freezing in of a non-equilibrium state.
