Studying moving holographic gratings in a Bi12TiO20 crystal with an applied external field. we have observed the appearance of a `'shape-asymmetry'' in the diffraction efficiency as a function of frequency detuning. The effect is mainly absorption-induced: for large modulation depth it is further enhanced by the influence of higher harmonics. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
