The XPS spectra of Y3Ni and Gd3Ni single crystals, pure gadolinium and nickel have been measured with monochromatized Al K(alpha) radiation. The valence bands of Y3Ni and Gd3Ni compounds consist of a single narrow state of nickel 3d (1.7 eV below the Fermi level) which is hybridized with the 4d states of yttrium or 5d states of gadolinium. Due to hybridization effects spin fluctuations on nickel are observed in the electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements.
