Endohedral metallofullerene Lu-C-82 molecules adsorbed on C-60 film have been investigated by an ultra-high-vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy. The C-60 film was obtained by depositing 2-3 ML of C-60 molecules on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surface. The as-deposited Lu-C-82 molecules were observed to form various structures on the C-60 film. The nucleation behavior of Lu-C-82 was compared with that of Nd-C-82 and Tb-C-82 on the C-60 film. These structures were explained based on the interactions of Lu-C-82-C-60, Lu-C-82-Lu-C-82, and Lu-C-82 scanning tunneling microscopy tip. (C) 2002 American Vacuum Society.
