A technique based on self-diffraction of the recording laser beams, one of which is phase modulated, is used for the estimation of the limiting trap concentration in photorefractive crystals. The amplitudes of the first and second harmonics of the diffracted beam have to be measured and from these data the trap concentration can be deduced. The technique is illustrated using photorefractive sillenite crystals (Bi12GeO20, Bi12SiO20, Bi12TiO20).
