The effects of overall and spatial rectification of optically excited space charge waves (SCW) in photorefractive Bi12TiO20 Crystals have been studied for the first time. The whole set of experimental data (frequency dependence of the amplitude of SCW, of the magnitude of the current variation caused by overall rectification and of the amplitude of the homogeneous space charge field caused by spatial rectification) are well described by the developed theory with three fitting parameters (Maxwell relaxation time, quality factor of SCW and screening factor). An extremely important role of the screening effect in the studied crystal has been revealed. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
